On the Social Media Double-Bind

It's so nice to actually be able to communicate on a workable platform rather than damn social media space where careless creators have taken a consumption device (the smart cell phone) and tried to treat it as if it were a bastard production device (a computer, a tablet, etc.).  Where did they come up with the idea of limiting text by character count?  That seems like: if you have a logistical problem, then don't do it.

There are fourteen-year-olds, right now, whom I will have to teach in less than seven years who think that their phones are devices of production and that the technological--read capitalist--limitations ought to shape the contours of their thinking.  It's bad enough that they will attend their highest level of education before they reach adulthood (age twenty-four for females; age twenty-five for males).  But for the past decade there has been this pernicious extra and completely unnecessary problem.

If you've reached this via instagram or something similar, understand this is the state of affairs.  The indictment lies with both of us and also with those who created these platforms.
